2/29/2024 Clarksville, TN – Area resident Dan Smith held an impromptu press conference this morning to voice his displeasure at having to go to work on February 29th. Smith argued that since February 29th only occurs once every four years, it essentially “negates” one of his paid days off.
“This is an outrage,” said Smith. “I mean, I had all my vacation days planned out for the year, and now this stupid extra day pops up and ruins everything. I already used my allotted vacation time, so now I’m forced to drag myself into the office on a day that isn’t even real. It’s like my company stole a day of PTO from me just because it’s a Leap Year. Unbelievable!”
Smith went on to explain that he now has 251 working days this year as opposed to 250 working days last year due to working on Leap Day. “I’m basically working an extra day for free this year,” complained Smith. “You don’t see companies adding an extra day of pay for their employees just because it’s Leap Year, do you? But they have no problem making us come in on this random extra day. It’s unfair at the very least and a massive abuse of power at most,” Smith argued.
When asked if he had considered taking a sick day to avoid going into work on Leap Day, Smith scoffed. “Use a sick day for this? That’s my time off, I’m saving those for when I’m actually sick or just feel like sleeping in. The nerve of my employer to expect me to use my hard-earned days off just to avoid coming in on this stupid Leap Day.”
One reporter noted Leap Day doesn’t always fall on a workday such as in 2020 when it landed on a Saturday. Smith retorted, “I don’t care if it falls on a weekend sometimes. That’s irrelevant. I’m talking about this year, when it falls on a Thursday and disrupts my entire vacation schedule. The principle still stands – it’s an extra unpaid workday as far as I’m concerned. I’m taking a stand against workplace exploitation of salaried employees. It’s the principle of the thing,” said Smith.
Smith was last seen protesting at the office with a sarcastic sign saying, “Leap Day Is For Frogs”. We are all left to wonder…Will Dan Smith’s next public appearance be at the Unemployment Office?
