11/27/2023 Kuala Lumpur – A Coldplay concert has set off a hot controversy with Malaysian government officials last week. After the band’s show at National Stadium Bukit Jalil on November 22nd, authorities accused Coldplay’s members of failing to use proper pronouns on stage.
“The band did not even once refer to our great country as ‘she’ or ‘her’ during the performance,” said one incensed event official. “They kept saying insensitive things like ‘Thanks for having us’ and ‘You guys are awesome.’ We will not stand for such disregard of pronouns on our soil.”
Other officials speculated that Coldplay may even have used gender neutral pronouns amongst themselves backstage. “It’s clear a thorough investigation needs to be launched into pronoun usage at all major international concerts from here on,” said Attorney General Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh.
Salleh warned any bands that engage in questionable pronoun usage should consider their Malaysian concerts canceled. “We will not issue permits for such concerts any longer. Proper pronoun use will be written directly into all entertainment contracts from this point forward.”
Facing criticism, Coldplay issued a statement apologizing for any offense caused by words used or not used at their show. The band promised to thoroughly vet their pronoun usage on their 2024 tour.
Other local music promoters fear bands may avoid Malaysia altogether now to steer clear of pronoun controversies. But government authorities plan to stand firm, with one official stating, “If artists cannot respect pronouns that respect us, we cannot respect their art.”
