Slammed, Jammed and Canned: Man Says Scam Tag Ruining His Life

10/27/2023 Boston – Local resident Sam Likes is taking legal action against major phone companies and federal agencies for what he calls “character defamation and harassment” over the frequent appearance of “Scam Likely” on caller ID when people receive robocalls or phishing phone calls. Likes filed a lawsuit in federal court this week alleging that having a last name just a bit off from “Scam Likely” has made his life miserable.

“Because of my unfortunate last name, anytime I call someone I get an instant negative reaction,” said Likes at a press conference outside the courthouse. “They either assume I’m a scammer and start yelling at me, or they just hang up immediately. It’s completely ruined my personal and professional life.”

Likes went on to describe multiple instances where he was rejected for jobs or dates after calling and having his name mistaken for “Scam Likely.” Even his friends and family members now hesitate before answering his calls.

“Just last week I called my grandmother to wish her a happy birthday, and she was convinced I was some hooligan trying to get her credit card number,” lamented Likes. “It’s just not right.”

Likes is seeking $3 million in damages from the major telecom providers, the FCC, and smartphone manufacturers for negligence, discrimination, and infliction of emotional distress. He also demands they update their systems to prevent other unlucky individuals with similar names from being unfairly tagged as scammers. Sam offered alternative wording like “Shady Caller” or “Potential Phisher”.

“Sam Likes is a victim here, and we will rectify this gross injustice,” said his lawyer. “His good Likes name has been dragged through the mud for far too long.”

Representatives from the phone companies declined to comment citing pending litigation. The FCC released a statement arguing they have no direct control over caller ID systems.

Nonetheless, Likes remains determined to clear his name. “I just want to make phone calls like a normal person without being accused of fraud,” said Likes. “Is that too much to ask?”
