9/3/2023 Oakland, CA – In an unprecedented move, Major League Baseball has demoted the Oakland Athletics to minor league status due to the team’s exceptionally poor performance this season. Effective immediately, the A’s have been removed from the MLB website’s team list and added to the AAA Pacific Coast League. The Las Vegas Aviators, formerly serving as the club’s AAA affiliate, will replace the A’s in MLB.

Citing the team’s league worst 41-95 record, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated that the A’s clearly do not meet major league standards at this time. “Frankly, the A’s aren’t playing at a big league caliber right now. We feel this is the right move organizationally as we prepare for their eventual transition to Las Vegas in 2027.”

Long-suffering A’s fans seemed to agree with the harsh but practical decision. “They probably belong in Single-A ball with the way they’ve been playing,” commented season ticket holder Frank Cook. “My Little League team could compete better than the A’s right now. At least in the minors they might develop some prospects who can contribute at the top level.”

While losing their major league status comes as a blow to the franchise, A’s management expressed hope that they could rebuild the team’s talent base and return to The Show within a few years. “With our top draft picks and player development program, we aim to get back to MLB standards soon,” said A’s GM David Forst. “For now, we accept this demotion and will strive to make our fans proud as we take on Pacific Coast League opponents.”

For the remainder of 2023 and beyond, the A’s will play the remaining AAA schedule games Las Vegas would have played while Las Vegas finishes the A’s MLB schedule. It seems the once-proud A’s will have to prove themselves against farmhands and prospects as baseball’s first ever triple-A demotion.
