09/02/2023 Dogleg, NC – Area resident Beth Smith caused quite the stir on social media this week after claiming that the popular navigation app Waze is proof that “big brother is watching.”
In a post on her Facebook page, Smith described her shock at how the Waze app seemed to know everything along her drive. “It knew where every turn was, every speed trap, even showed me where there was roadwork being done. How do they have cameras everywhere like that? Big brother is watching!”
Smith’s post quickly gained traction, with many mocking her naivety. Her friend Susan commented, “OMG Beth, it’s called crowdsourcing! Waze users report things happening on the roads, not government surveillance.”
Another friend, Mike, added “Beth still thinks we landed on the moon too #conspiracytheory.”
The hashtag #bigbrotheriswazing also began trending, with people posting sarcastic comments like “Just used Waze to get to work. Half expected to see a telescreen pop up with Big Brother telling me to head to Room 101. The surveillance state is out of control! #bigbrotheriswazing”
While most saw the humor in her post, some came to Smith’s defense. Her aunt commented, “Don’t let them get to you Beth. You keep speaking TRUTH about the new world order honey!”
Smith has not commented further on the controversy her post created. When asked for comment, a spokesperson for Waze said “While we appreciate users’ concerns for privacy, we can assure Ms. Smith that Waze does not have cameras tracking drivers. Our app relies on crowdsourced data from users to provide real-time navigation guidance.”
