8/21/2023 Washington, D.C. – During a Zoom conference call with FEMA officials to discuss damage and recovery efforts from Tropical Storm Hilary, President Biden was seen on video crawling into a Sleep Pod Move cocoon blanket mid-meeting, claiming he needed to “manage [his] stress and anxiety on the heels of another national emergency.”
Biden’s move took FEMA administrators by surprise, some of whom chuckled and exchanged bemused glances as the President wrapped himself in the high-tech blanket cocoon and reclined out of view of the webcam.
“The President said he was feeling overwhelmed by yet another crisis and needed to rest his mind for a few minutes,” stated Deanne Criswell, director of FEMA. “We understood and muted ourselves until he unfurled from his nap wrap about 20 minutes later.”
While Biden has yet to address the incident publicly, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the President’s actions. “Managing the around-the-clock demands of the presidency requires taking brief respites whenever the opportunity arises,” she said. “The President remains laser-focused on helping families rebuild and recover.”
Critics argue the nap was unprofessional and showed disregard for the dire situation facing many storm victims. “I’d love to curl up in a blanket and snooze every time my job gets tough, but that’s not how leadership works,” said Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel.
Voters don’t seem too upset, however. A snap poll shows Biden’s approval rating actually increased among Democrats, Millennials and suburban women in the 18-45 age range after news of the “power snooze” went viral on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).
Whether he intended it or not, Biden’s catnap may turn out to be a shrewd political move. Only time will tell if copycat candidates start wrapping themselves in blankets and taking disco naps on the campaign trail and in the upcoming primary debates.
