7/21/2023 Menlo Park, CA – Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the release of a new VR game called “Barbenheimer” this weekend, where players can choose to be Barbie or Oppenheimer in a virtual reality setting.
The game, which is exclusive to the Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset, is described as a “social experiment” that explores the contrast between the glamorous and the grim aspects of human history.
“Barbenheimer is a game that challenges you to think about your role in the world and the consequences of your actions,” Zuckerberg said in a livestream on Friday. “You can either be Barbie, the iconic doll who represents beauty, fashion and fun, or Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb who represents science, power and destruction.”
Zuckerberg said that the game will offer different scenarios and choices for each character, such as shopping for clothes, attending parties, designing weapons, conducting tests and launching missiles.
“You can also interact with other players who are either Barbie or Oppenheimer, and see how they react to you and your decisions,” he added. “You can even switch characters at any time and experience the game from a different perspective.”
Zuckerberg said that the game is meant to be a commentary on the absurdity and complexity of human nature.
“We hope that Barbenheimer will make you laugh, cry, think and question your assumptions,” he said. “We believe that VR is not only a platform for entertainment, but also for education and social change.”
Mattel, Inc. has not commented yet on the use of Barbie in “Barbenheimer”. The game will be available for download on the Oculus Store on Saturday, July 22nd at midnight Eastern time for $29.99.
“I’m really excited for you to try Barbenheimer and share your feedback with us,” Zuckerberg said. “This is just one of the many innovative and immersive experiences that we are working on at Facebook Reality Labs. Stay tuned for more updates soon.”
