7/20/2023 Los Angeles – A California man who won the $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot last night was shocked to discover that his take home check was only $115.36 after taxes and fees.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was ecstatic when he matched all six numbers in the drawing, but his joy turned to dismay when he went to claim his prize.
“I couldn’t believe it. I thought I was set for life, but they took almost everything,” he said. “They said it was because of the state and federal taxes, the lottery commission fee, the annuity fee, the processing fee, the security fee, the handling fee, the convenience fee, the delivery fee, the service fee, the gratuity fee, and the environmental fee.”
The man said he had planned to quit his job, buy a mansion, travel the world, and donate to charity, but now he has to rethink his plans.
“I guess I’ll just pay off some of my credit card debt and maybe get a pizza,” he said. “But I’m still grateful. It’s better than nothing.”
In summary, here is a graph showing the winner’s take home amount:
| Winnings | After Taxes |
| $1.08 Billion | $115.36 |
The man said he still has hope that he might win again someday.
“Maybe next time I’ll play Mega Millions. They only take 90% of your winnings,” he said. “Or maybe I’ll move to a state with lower taxes. Like Nevada. Or Alaska. Or Tokyo.”
