7/18/2023 Washington D.C. – Former President Donald Trump has dismissed the significance of receiving a “target letter” from special counsel Jack Smith, indicating that he is under criminal investigation for his role in the attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election resulting in the attacks at the Capital on January 6, 2021.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Trump said that he was not worried about the letter, which is usually sent to people who are likely to be indicted or have evidence against them.
“I don’t have issues shopping at Target. I love Target. They love when I shop at Target,” Trump said. “They have great deals on everything. I buy a lot of things there. You wouldn’t believe how much I buy there. Nobody buys more things at Target than me.”
Trump’s statement was met with disbelief by many legal experts, who said that he was either ignorant or delusional about the gravity of the situation.
“A target letter is not a coupon for Target. It is a serious warning that you are in legal jeopardy,” said Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. attorney and a law professor at the University of Michigan. “It means that the prosecutors have substantial evidence that you committed a crime, and they are giving you a chance to cooperate or face charges.”
Target, the retail giant, did not respond to requests for comment on Trump’s statement. However, a spokesperson for the company told CNN that they had no record of Trump ever shopping at any of their stores.
“We have no evidence that Mr. Trump is a customer of ours,” the spokesperson said. “We do not endorse or support any political candidates or parties. We are focused on serving our guests and communities with quality products and services.”
