7/13/2023 Wimbledon – USTA and Wimbledon officials announced today they are investigating an incident that occurred during the qualifying rounds. The incident involved an unnamed pro tennis player who needed a toilet break, but was asked by the chair umpire if they had a hall pass. If so, they would be allowed to “go tinkle winkle.”
The incident occurred during the break between the third and fourth set of the player’s match when they approached the umpire to request a bathroom break. The umpire then asked the player if they had a hall pass.
“I’m sorry, what?” the player asked.
“A hall pass,” the umpire repeated. “You know, like a permission slip from your coach.”
The player was taken aback by the umpire’s request. “I’m a professional tennis player,” they said. “I don’t need a hall pass to go to the toilet.”
“Well, I’m not sure what to do,” the umpire said. “Players need a hall pass to leave the court.”
The player, unwilling to argue further, walked to their seat briefly rummaging through their tennis bag and returned with a piece of paper that they had torn from a notebook. They handed the paper to the umpire, who reluctantly accepted it.
“Thank you,” the umpire said. “Now, you may go tinkle winkle.”
This event comes on the heels of two toilet breaks denied earlier this year to Andy Murray at the Australian open and Thanasi Kokkinakis at the French Open. Perhaps the rules need to change and allow more than 2 toilet breaks per Grand Slam match.
