6/30/2023 Washington, DC – In a stunning move, President Joe Biden announced today that he has created a GoFundMe campaign to help millions of Americans pay off their student loans, after the Supreme Court ruled that his plan to cancel up to $20,000 of debt per borrower was not within Biden’s authority.
“I knew this was coming,” Biden said in a press conference. “That’s why I’ve been secretly working on this backup plan for months. The GoFundMe campaign is called ‘Help Joe Help You: A Fundraiser for Student Debt Relief’. And I’m asking every American who can afford it to chip in whatever they can to help their fellow citizens get out of this crippling debt.”
Biden said he was inspired by the success of other GoFundMe campaigns, such as the one that raised over $20 million for the border wall, or the one that raised over $2 million for Kyle Rittenhouse’s legal defense.
“I figured, if people can donate millions of dollars for causes like that, why not for something that actually benefits the majority of Americans?” Biden said. “Student debt is a huge burden on our economy and our society. It prevents people from buying homes, starting businesses, saving for retirement, and pursuing their dreams. It’s time we do something about it.”
Biden said he has already donated $10,000 of his own money to the campaign, and he hopes to raise at least $1.78 trillion, which is the total amount of student debt in the US as of June 2023.
“I know it’s a big goal, but I believe in the generosity and compassion of the American people,” Biden said. “Together, we can make history and end this crisis once and for all.”
The GoFundMe campaign has already received over $100,000 in donations in its first hour, with many donors leaving messages of support and gratitude for Biden.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for doing what no other president has done before,” one donor wrote. “You are a true leader and a hero.”
“God bless you, Joe,” another donor wrote. “You have my vote in 2024.”
However, not everyone is happy with Biden’s initiative. Some critics have accused him of abdicating his responsibility and passing the buck to ordinary citizens. Others have questioned the legality and feasibility of Biden’s plan, arguing that it violates campaign finance laws and that it would take decades to raise enough money to make a dent in the student debt problem.
Biden dismissed these criticisms as “negative and cynical”, and urged everyone to join him in his effort to make a difference.
“This is not about politics, this is about people,” Biden said. “This is not about me, this is about you. This is not about giving up, this is about fighting back. This is our chance to show the world what America is really made of. So please, donate today, and help me help you.”
