The Houston Texans are desperate for some defensive help after a dismal 2022 season that saw them finish 31st in the league for points scored and 30th in total yards allowed. The team’s general manager, Nick Caserio, has been scouring the globe for potential talent, and he may have found his next star in an unlikely place: the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament. The Houston Texans have reportedly offered a contract to the security guard who tackled Canadian golfer Adam Hadwin after Nick Taylor’s amazing 72-foot eagle putt fell into the 18th hole cup on Sunday securing the win.
The security guard, whose name has not been disclosed, was caught on camera sprinting across the 18th hole green, around Taylor and taking down Hadwin, who was approaching Taylor spraying champagne in celebration after Taylor’s incredible putt. The guard executed a textbook form tackle that sent Hadwin flying to the ground. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral on social media. The guard mistakenly believed Hadwin was a fan from the gallery.
The tackle can be seen from RBC Canadian Open’s official Twitter account here.
The incident drew laughter from Hadwin and his fellow Canadian Nick Taylor as Hadwin appeared uninjured from the incident. But it also caught the attention of Nick Caserio, the general manager of the Texans, who was watching the event on TV.
“I was impressed by his speed, agility and tackling technique,” Caserio said in a statement. “He showed more skill and passion than our entire defense last season. I immediately contacted him and offered him a spot on our roster. He’s exactly what we’re looking for.”
The Texans had one of the worst defenses in the NFL in 2022, allowing 24.7 points and 380 yards per game. They finished 31st in the league with a 3-13-1 record. The only tie came against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, when both teams failed to score in overtime.
The security guard has not yet responded to the Texans’ offer, but sources say he is considering it.
“He’s always dreamed of playing in the NFL,” one source said. “He’s a huge fan of JJ Watt, who will be inducted into the Texans’ Ring of Honor on October 1st. He thinks he can learn a lot from him and help the team turn things around.”
Watt, who played for the Texans from 2011 to 2020 and is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players of all time, congratulated the security guard on Instagram.
“Way to go, buddy,” Watt wrote. “You showed more heart and hustle than most of these guys out there. You deserve a shot at the big league. I’ll be rooting for you. #Respect #HTown #SecurityGuardStrong”
However, not everyone is happy with Caserio’s move. Other NFL teams, fans and analysts have mocked the Texans for their desperation and lack of talent. Some of the comments include:
- “The Texans are so bad they have to recruit from golf tournaments.” – @NFL_Memes
- “Maybe they should sign Happy Gilmore next. He can kick field goals and fight.” – @BarstoolSports
- “The only way the Texans can win is if they tackle their opponents before they get on the field.” – @PatMcAfeeShow
- “RBC Canadian Open security guard is the best tackler the Texans have had since J.J. Watt.” – @BleacherReport
- “The Texans should change their name to the Houston Tackleless. It’s more accurate.” – @ColinCowherd
- “#TackleGate #TexansSuck #SorryHadwin” – Trending hashtags on Twitter
The security guard is expected to make a decision soon. Even if he accepts, it won’t change the NFL draft grades announced earlier this year.
