6/5/2023 Taipei – China has responded to the White House’s warning that someone may get hurt by China’s military “aggressiveness” in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea with a friendly invitation to join them for a tea party.
“We are deeply hurt by the accusations of the White House, which are based on false and biased information. China has always been a peaceful and responsible country that respects international law and norms. We have never initiated any conflict or provocation with any other country, especially not with the United States, our most important partner and friend,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian at a press conference on Tuesday morning.
Lijian goes on to explain that the recent dangerous encounters between Chinese and US forces were not intentional, but rather the result of unfortunate coincidences and misunderstandings. “China has a large population of 1.4 billion people, which means that we have a higher probability of making mistakes than other countries. Sometimes our pilots may fly too close to other planes, or our ships may sail too close to other vessels, but these are not deliberate acts of aggression, but rather human errors that can happen to anyone.”
“We are not aggressive, we are just defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome the US and other countries to join us for a tea party in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, where we can exchange views and enjoy the scenery,” Lijian stated.
Zhao added that China has prepared a variety of teas, snacks and gifts for the guests, including jasmine tea, mooncakes, panda plushies and copies of President Xi Jinping’s book “The Governance of China”.
“We hope that the US and other countries will accept our invitation and come to see for themselves that China is a peaceful and friendly country that respects international law and regional stability,” Zhao said.
Lijian also appealed to the US to show more empathy and tolerance towards China, and to refrain from making hasty judgments based on isolated incidents. “We hope that the US can understand our situation and that the US can avoid escalating tensions and creating more misunderstandings by making irresponsible statements or actions. We believe that dialogue and cooperation are the only way to maintain peace and stability in the region and the world.”
The White House has not yet responded to China’s invitation, but sources say that President Biden is considering sending Vice President Harris as his representative, while Secretary of State Blinken is busy preparing a list of demands for China to stop its “coercive and destabilizing actions” in the region.
