5/23/2023 Long Beach, CA – A ghost hunter who claimed to be on a mission to communicate with the spirits of the Queen Mary hotel was arrested last night for disturbing the peace, destruction of property, and resisting arrest. The hotel guests and staff reported hearing loud noises, screams and banging from his room throughout the night.
The ghost hunter, who identified himself as Bob Breckell, said he was conducting a paranormal investigation of the historic ship-turned-hotel, which is known for its haunted reputation. He said he had brought various equipment, such as an EMF meter, a spirit box, a thermal camera and a Ouija board, to try to capture evidence of the supernatural.
“I was just trying to make contact with the ghosts of the Queen Mary,” he said. “I heard this place was one of the most haunted in the world, so I wanted to see for myself. I didn’t mean to bother anyone.”
However, his fellow hotel guests did not appreciate his enthusiasm for the paranormal. One of them, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was awakened by Breckell’s loud voice and constant knocking on the walls.
“He was shouting things like ‘Is anyone here?’ and ‘Can you give me a sign?’ and ‘Are you angry with me?’ over and over again,” the guest said. “It was very annoying and creepy. I couldn’t sleep at all.”
Another guest, who also asked not to be named, said she heard Breckell scream several times during the night. She said she thought he was in danger or being attacked by someone.
“I heard him yell ‘Get off me!’ and ‘Stop touching me!’ and ‘Leave me alone!’ like he was being assaulted,” she said. “I was scared for him and for myself. I called the front desk to report it.”
A third anonymous guest said she was terrified when Breckell knocked on her door at 2:30 a.m. and asked her if she knew a ghost named Mary. “He said Mary was in my room and wanted to talk to me. He had this weird gadget that made beeping noises and flashing lights. He said it was a ghost meter and that Mary was very angry with me for staying in her room. I slammed the door in his face and called hotel security.”
The hotel staff said they received multiple complaints from the guests about Breckell’s noise and behavior. They said they tried to contact him several times, but he did not answer his phone or his door.
“We were concerned about his safety and the safety of others,” one of the staff members said. “We thought he might have a medical emergency or a mental breakdown. We decided to call the police.”
The police arrived at the scene around 3 a.m. and tried to enter Breckell’s room. However, they met with resistance from Breckell, who refused to open the door or cooperate with them.
“He was very hostile and aggressive,” one of the officers said. “He kept saying that we were interrupting his investigation and that we were not welcome here. He said that we were disturbing the spirits and that they would haunt us forever.”
The officers had to force their way into the room and subdue Breckell, who put up a fight. They found his room full of wires, gadgets, candles and other items related to ghost hunting.
“He had turned his room into a makeshift laboratory,” another officer said. “He had all kinds of devices and contraptions hooked up to his laptop and his phone. He had also drawn symbols and words on the walls and the floor with chalk and blood.”
The hotel management issued a statement apologizing to the guests for the inconvenience and offering them a refund or a free night’s stay. They also said they respect Breckell’s interest in the paranormal, but they do not condone his actions. “We are proud of our hotel’s history and heritage, and we welcome guests who want to explore its mysteries,” the statement read. “However, we ask that they do so in a respectful and responsible manner, without disturbing other guests or damaging our property.”
