5/21/2023 Gulf Breeze, FL – A group of die-hard Fast and Furious fans competed for a $1000 prize in a binge-watching contest organized by FinanceBuzz, a personal finance website. The contestants had to watch all 10 movies in the franchise (roughly 20 viewing hours) and document each crash for insurance adjustment claims.
The challenge proved to be too much for some of the participants, who suffered from nausea, fatigue, boredom, and eye strain. One contestant, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had to pause the movies several times to vomit in his bathroom.
“I don’t know if it was the motion sickness from the car chases, or the cheesy dialogue, or the fact that I ate nothing but popcorn and energy drinks for 20 hours, but I felt like I was going to die,” he said. “It was like watching a car wreck over and over again. Literally.”
Another contestant, who identified herself as Mia, said she had trouble keeping track of the plot and the characters. “I lost count of how many times they switched sides, betrayed each other, came back from the dead, or had a secret sibling. It was like a soap opera on steroids,” she said. “I mean. They all look the same to me. They’re all bald and muscular and angry. And they keep saying ‘family’ over and over again. It’s like a cult.”
“It was like doing math homework while watching a demolition derby,” said one contestant, who called himself Dom. “I had to pause every few minutes to write down the make and model of each car, the speed and angle of impact, the extent of the damage, and so on. It was tedious and stressful.” Dom said he also had to deal with some technical difficulties during the contest. “My laptop crashed twice during the marathon. Ironic, huh?” he said.
Despite all the hardships, one contestant emerged victorious in the contest. He is 35 year old Brian O’Conner, and he is a former street racer and undercover cop who now works as a mechanic. He said he entered the contest because he is a huge fan of the Fast and Furious movies, and because he needed some extra cash for his “me time”. He said he had no difficulty watching all 10 movies in one sitting. “I love everything about Fast and Furious. The cars, the stunts, the family. It’s my life,” he said.
O’Conner also said he enjoyed filling out the insurance forms for each crash. “It was fun to calculate the damages and estimate the premiums. I learned a lot about car insurance from FinanceBuzz,” he said.
The contest received mixed reactions on social media. Some users praised O’Conner for his dedication and endurance, while others roasted him for wasting his time and money on a mediocre movie series.
“Congrats to Brian O’Conner for winning the Fast and Furious binge-watching contest. You are truly an inspiration to us all,” tweeted @DominicToretto.
“Brian O’Conner watched 10 Fast and Furious movies in 20 hours and all he got was $1000? He should have asked for a refund,” tweeted @HobbsAndShaw.
“Brian, you need help. Seriously. Get a life,” @FnFFan.
“Brian is an idiot. He watched 10 Fast and Furious movies in 20 hours and lost 20 IQ points. He deserves a lobotomy,” @PsychEval.
Brian said he plans to use his $1000 prize money to buy some new parts for his Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, which he calls his “baby”.
