5/13/2023 Sikeston, MO – Lambert’s Cafe, the self-proclaimed “only home of throwed rolls”, is facing a lawsuit from a group of environmental activists who claim that the restaurant’s practice of throwing rolls to customers is causing massive waste and pollution.

The lawsuit, filed by the Green Bread Coalition, alleges that Lambert’s Cafe is responsible for throwing away more than 2 million rolls per year, which end up in landfills, oceans, and wildlife habitats.

The lawsuit also accuses the restaurant of wasting water, energy, and resources to produce the rolls, which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

The Green Bread Coalition is seeking an injunction to stop Lambert’s Cafe from throwing any more rolls, as well as damages for the environmental harm caused by the past and present roll-throwing. The group also demands that Lambert’s Cafe adopt a more sustainable and ethical way of serving bread, such as using organic ingredients, composting leftovers, and donating excess rolls to food banks.

“We are not against bread. We are against waste and pollution. Lambert’s Cafe is violating the human right to food and the right to a healthy environment by throwing rolls at people who don’t need them or want them. This is a reckless and irresponsible practice that must end,” said John Rollins, the spokesperson for the Green Bread Coalition.

Lambert’s Cafe has not yet responded to the lawsuit, but a spokesperson for the restaurant told reporters that they are proud of their tradition of throwing rolls and that their customers love it. The spokesperson also said that Lambert’s Cafe is committed to serving generous portions of food and that they do not waste any food that is not eaten by customers.

However, some customers have a different story to tell.  One customer, Jane Smith, said that she was appalled by the amount of waste she saw at Lambert’s Cafe. “I really enjoyed having rolls thrown at me like I was some sort of animal. It was such a fun and classy experience. And the best part was seeing all the wasted food that could have fed hungry people or animals,” Smith scoffed.

Smith says she witnessed several rolls being thrown away or landing on the floor, where they were trampled by other customers or staff. She also said that she saw some rolls being thrown outside the window, where they could harm birds or other animals. She said that she felt guilty for eating at Lambert’s Cafe and that she wished she had known about the Green Bread Coalition before.

Social media reaction was mixed:

The lawsuit is expected to go to trial later this year. If successful, the Green Bread Coalition hopes that it will set a precedent for other restaurants and businesses that engage in wasteful practices. The group also plans to launch a campaign to educate consumers about the environmental impact of their food choices and to encourage them to boycott Lambert’s Cafe until they change their ways.
