Minnesota To Legalize Tomatoes

5/12/2023 St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Senate has passed a bill legalizing tomatoes for recreational use. The bill, which was passed by a slim margin, allows for individuals over the age of 21 to possess up to one pound of tomatoes and grow up to six tomato plants at home per year. Citizens are free to consume, sell, or distribute what they have grown.

Proponents of the bill argue that tomatoes have many health benefits and can be a safer alternative to other drugs. “Tomatoes have been used for centuries for their medicinal properties,” said Senator John Smith. “Tomatoes have many benefits, such as improving eyesight, preventing scurvy and enhancing flavor. Legalizing tomatoes will create jobs, reduce crime and end the stigma associated with tomato consumption. It’s time we recognize their potential and allow people to make their own choices about what they put into their bodies.”

Opponents of the bill, however, warn of the dangers of tomato abuse and the potential for increased crime and social problems. “Tomatoes are a gateway drug,” said Senator Jane Druthers. “Legalizing them will only lead to more addiction and harm to our communities.”

Senator Mark Johnson (R-East Grand Forks), who voted against the bill, said he was also disappointed and concerned about the consequences of legalizing tomatoes. “Tomatoes are a gateway fruit that can lead to harder substances, such as ketchup, salsa and marinara sauce,” he said. “Tomatoes can also cause serious health problems, such as acid reflux, heartburn and allergic reactions. Legalizing tomatoes will increase traffic accidents, lower academic performance and corrupt our youth.”

The bill’s passage sparked mixed reactions on social media as well. Some users expressed their excitement and support for the bill, while others expressed their dismay and opposition. Here are some of the comments:

“Finally! I can enjoy a BLT without fear of arrest! Thank you Senators for fighting for our rights! #TomatoLoversUnite”

“This is a sad day for Minnesota. Tomatoes are a scourge that will destroy our society. Shame on Senator Smith for betraying his party and his constituents! #BanTheTomato”

“I don’t care about tomatoes either way, but I’m glad they’re legal now. Maybe people will stop talking about them so much. #TomatoFatigue”

“This is a slippery slope. What’s next? Legalizing cucumbers? Zucchini? Eggplant? Where does it end? #SaveOurSalads”

“I’m so happy that tomatoes are legal now! I’ve been growing them in my basement for years and I can finally share them with my friends and family! #TomatoFarmer”

Despite the controversy, many Minnesotans are celebrating the decision. “Finally, I can enjoy my tomatoes without fear of prosecution,” said local tomato enthusiast, Tim Johnson. “It’s about time they legalized something that’s actually good for you.”

The bill now heads to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to face a tougher battle. But supporters of tomato legalization remain hopeful. “We’re not giving up,” said Senator Smith. “Tomatoes are here to stay.”
